Marcules is a black rhino. This makes him important as black rhinos are critically endangered. He was abandoned by his mother in the Kruger National Park. He was rescued by Dr Markus Hoffmeyer (after whom Marcules is named) and was taken to the Kruger National Park’s rhino bomas. Marcules did not get along with the other rhinos and became very unhappy there. It was decided to move him to Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary because Odin, another black rhino, lives there. Marcules arrived at the sanctuary in February 2015. The hope was that he and Odin would bond and become friends, providing important company for Odin and a happy environment for Marcules.

Marcules is slightly younger than Odin, who took to him immediately! It was a beautiful thing to see them together, even though black rhino are solitary by nature. The two black rhinos are now very close. They do everything together: they walk together, eat together, take mud baths and lie together. They have recently been released into a large area where they can browse freely, drink cool fresh water from a stream and play hide and seek in the thick bushes. With the help of so many people, their future shines brightly.
